Early start for Kucia

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — Veteran area basketball coach John Hritz has a grandson who is making waves in the high school golf world at a very young age.

Mason Kucia, an 8th grader in the Indian Land school system, won the Class AAAA South Carolina High School League state championship by firing rounds of 72 and 69 on Monday and Tuesday at Dolphin Head Golf Club.

In South Carolina, seventh- and and eighth-graders are eligible to participate in high school championships.

Mason is the son of Jacki and Ben Cucia of Indian Land, S.C. Jacki is John’s daughter and is a speech therapist. The family lived in Cleveland before moving to South Carolina to further Mason’s golf career.

Hritz used to babysit his grandson in Cleveland and, at age 5, started taking him to a par 3 course to keep him busy.

Hritz is the current head girls basketball coach at Leetonia High School.
