Potters get new coach
EAST LIVERPOOL — Ohio’s winningest volleyball coach will return to the sidelines at East Liverpool.
A month removed from stepping away from Wellsville, Dan McKinstry will lead the East Liverpool varsity program. The hire was approved by the East Liverpool Board of Education.
“I learned the job was open from a few friends who texted me and I figured I would get my resume ready,” McKinstry said.
He said the school district reacted positively to him in the interview and told him he had the job on Thursday.
McKinstry has yet to meet with the team but says he is working on plans for Jump Stretch training, summer leagues and summer camps.
He replaces Kelly Kiger, who did not reapply for the position.
McKinstry said he was told the team returns five letterwinners and has talent coming up from the lower levels.
He also said it will be different coaching at a larger school but he said he was relieved to see West Branch, Crestview and South Range each on the schedule twice next season.
“I scrimmaged a lot of those schools at Wellsville, so that’s good, but we’re going to have to find new teams to scrimmage here,” McKinstry said.
McKinstry had served as Wellsville’s volleyball coach since 1997. Previously he was the head volleyball coach at East Palestine from 1978-1996.
His career record is 773-265.
In early March, McKinstry had said “my contract was up and it’s time for a change” regarding his position at Wellsville.
He is currently the head softball coach at Springfield Local High School as well.
