Brownfield, Weir, Jamison top county

The 2020-21 Columbiana County basketball player of the year voting was as close as an overtime tournament game.

Lisbon senior Blayne Brownfield and Salem junior Drew Weir shared boys player of the year honors, while Salem senior Kyla Jamison was named girls player of the year in balloting by coaches on Sunday.

Each player received four votes in a close tally. Six girls and five boys received votes for player of the year.

Brownfield was the county’s leading scorer and led the Blue Devils to a 14-9 season.

He topped Lisbon by averaging 23.8 points and eight rebounds a game.

Weir led the Quakers to a 16-8 season and a share of the Eastern Buckeye Conference title.

He averaged a team-high 14.3 points and six rebounds a game.

Weir was the only boys unanimous selection.

Jamison is on the county first team for a third straight season. She led the team in scoring for a third season, averaging 11.4 points and 7.6 rebounds a game.

Crestview senior Krista Perry, Columbiana senior Grace Witmer and East Palestine senior Joclyn Fristik were the girls unanimous selections.

Coaches of the year are Heartland Christian’s Josh Scott for the boys and Salem’s Sarah Hamilton for the girls.

Scott guided the Lions to a school-best 17-5 season and an OHSAA home playoff game for the first time.

Hamilton led the Quakers to a 16-6 record in her first season as head coach and a share of the Eastern Buckeye Conference title.

Crestview senior Drake Golden is on the boys third team for a third year and Heartland Christian junior Jonathan Bertovich for a second straight year.

Brownfield, Weir, Golden and Bertovich are joined on the boys first team by Wellsville senior Luke Green, East Liverpool junior Cole Dailey, Southern senior Brock Smalley and Heartland Christian senior Joey Donofrio.

The boys second team includes Lisbon senior Ryan McCullough, United senior Keaton Baker, Beaver Local junior Skylar Pappas, East Liverpool junior Zavea Green, Wellsville sophomore Jaxon Brewer, Leetonia senior Ian Davis, Salem senior Hunter Griffith and Columbiana junior Nick Million.

Perry is on the girls first team for a fourth time and Fristik for a second time.

Jamison, Perry and Fristik are joined on the girls first team by Columbiana senior Grace Witmer, Southern freshman Ashley Shroades, Heartland Christian junior Madi Matthews, East Liverpool senior Mikayla Reed and Leetonia senior Taran Ferry.

The girls second team includes Salem sophomore Abbie Davidson, United sophomore Madison Kibler, Leetonia sophomore Ella Gregorino, East Palestine senior Payton Sherry, Columbiana junior Tori Long, Crestview senior Mara Halas, Lisbon junior Parker Henthorne and Beaver Local junior Jordan Palmer.
