Quakers get best of Beavers
NEW PHILADELPHIA — New Philadelphia’s swarming defense created all kinds of problems for the Beaver Local boys basketball team as the Quakers came away with a 60-25 win in a Div. II sectional opener on Wednesday.
The Quakers (12-9) employed a trapping defensive sceme that forced Beaver Local into 20 turnovers in the contest including 13 in the first half. A 22-0 run that stretched from the second quarter into the third quarter put Beaver Local in a tough spot.
The Quakers led 38-14 at the half and 55-22 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was played under running clock conditions.
New Philadelphia 6-5 sophomore Carter Vandall had 11 points to lead the winners. The Quakers outrebounded the Beavers, 29-15.
Beaver Local was just 1 for 12 from behind the three-point arc in the game.
Brady Smith had 10 points for the Beavers, 8-12.
New Philadelphia will host Minerva on Saturday in the sectional final. Minerva beat Indian Valley 51-48 on Wednesday.
