Marlington ranked fifth

COLUMBUS — The Marlington girls basketball team dropped two spots in the state poll after sitting out last week in COVID-19 quarantine.

The Dukes, ranked fifth in Division II, are 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the Eastern Buckeye Conference. They are scheduled to return to action tonight at Carrollton before hosting West Branch on Saturday.

Poland moved up three spots to 11th in Division II. The Bulldogs are 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast 8 heading into Thursday’s home game against Lakeview.

Poland has won nine straight games since falling to Salem, 46-41, in the Dec. 2 season opener.

Mount Union team captains

ALLIANCE — Mount Union’s football team has named three team captains — senior linebacker Kordell Ford (Massillon Washington), senior wide receiver Derrick Harvey Jr. (Akron Buchtel) and sophomore quarterback Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla.).

Plunk was the backup quarterback as a freshman in 2019 and completed 71 percent of his passes (59-for-83) for 961 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Mount Union’s spring football season — replacing the fall season that was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic — begins March 17 against Muskingum University at Zanesville High School.

Ford is a three-time letterwinner, who started all 12 games in 2019.

Harvey was an All-OAC second team selection in 2019 with 34 catches for 691 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has played two seasons with the Purple Raiders after two at Savannah State (Ga.).

Plunk was the backup quarterback as a freshman in 2019 and completed 71 percent of his passes (59-for-83) for 961 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was 13-for-17 for 221 yards with a touchdown against Muskingum and threw three touchdowns at Marietta.
