Springfield boys are off and running in season-opening win over Salem

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Nine days after a loss on the last play of the Division VI state championship football game, the Springfield Tigers basketball team bounced back as winners on the basketball court Tuesday night.

Alex Rothwell scored 24 points and RJ Smith added 16 in leading the Tigers past Salem, 59-51, in their season opener.

Beau Brungard added eight points. He ran for four touchdowns in a 38-35 loss to top-ranked Coldwater in the state football final. Football starters Clay Medvec and Lukas Yemma were in the starting lineup Tuesday.

The Tigers jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the first quarter as Rothwell scored six points and Brungard, Medvec and Smith added three-pointers.

Salem drops to 1-1 on the season.

Drew Weir topped the Quakers with 21 points. Brock Young followed with 10 points.

Springfield also won the junior varsity game, 60-41, as Jakob Joyce scored 23 points. Caden Swiger had 12 points for the Quakers.

Salem will host Minerva on Friday, while Springfield is scheduled to entertain Jackson-Milton next Tuesday.

West Branch 58, Urban Scholars 17

BELOIT –West Branch boys basketball moved to 2-0 on the season after defeating Youngstown Academy for Urban Scholars 58-17 on Tuesday night.

The Warriors led 35-15 at the half and only allowed two second half points to cruise to the win.

For West Branch, Nick Wilson led the way with 13 points. Alek Wilson and Dru DeShields added 10 points each.

The Warriors had 26 field goals compared to Urban Scholars seven.

This game was a replacement game as the Warriors were originally scheduled to play Ravenna, but that game was canceled.

There was no jayvee contest.

West Branch will play at Alliance on Friday.
