McCullough gives Devils good start

LISBON–The Lisbon Blue Devils had everything clicking in a 38-14 victory over Mathews on Friday in a non-conference, regular season clash.

Lisbon (2-6) was ignited by an 82-yard kickoff return for touchdown by Ryan McCullough to start off the game, and it never looked back. Despite a blowout for the Blue Devils, they only outgained 3-5 Mathews 280-227.

Deflated from the start, turnovers were the story of the game for Mathews, as Lisbon recovered three Mathews’ fumbles in the first half. Although the Mustangs didn’t commit a turnover in the second half, the damage was already done.

McCullough made an impression in all facets of the game, as he returned a kickoff, scored two rushing touchdowns, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Logan Stauffer also turned in a solid performance for the Blue Devils, scoring an offensive and defensive touchdown.

Lisbon played a physical game, dominating the line of scrimmage. In a big victory, the Blue Devils only had to throw the ball seven times. They continuously attacked the Mustangs on the ground, accumulating 219 yards on 24 carries.

For Mathews, quarterback Alex Schiavi and Xander Gedeon carried the load offensively. Schiavi threw for 114 yards and a touchdown, while Gedeon took three rushes for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Both teams will continue their seasons next week, as Mathews hosts Waterloo and Lisbon hosts Sebring.
