Quakers lead way at Spartan

BOARDMAN– The Salem girls finished sixth and the Salem boys edged West Branch for 10th in Division II at the 35th annual Spartan Invitational.

The boys and girls each ran two races because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Salem girls scored 209 points to place six out of 27 teams. West Branch was 25th with 634 points.

Carly Hall paced the Quakers as she was sixth out of 238 girls runners. Molly Hopple followed in 26th.

Hawken’s Ella Gibson, the two-time defending Division II state champion, won the girls race by covering the 3.1-mile course at Boardman High School in 18 minutes, 52 seconds.

Woodridge’s Ryan Champa won the 263-runner boys race in 16:10

Woodridge, which has won the last two Division II state team titles, finished first with 58 points. Marlington was second with 88. Salem was 10th with 294, one better than West Branch.

Salem’s Jacob McLachlan and West Branch’s Justin Cederbloom were 27th and 28th, respectively.
