Beavers set schedule
CALCUTTA — Beaver Local will open its football schedule at rival East Liverpool on Aug. 28.
The restructured schedule will see the Beavers on the road for the first two weeks and home games against Indian Creek, Minerva and Bellaire.
All games are slated for 7 p.m. starts.

Disc golf axed
LISBON — The Scenic Vista Challenge disc golf tournament scheduled for Sept. 5 has been canceled. The event was originally scheduled for May 30 but was postponed due to the pandemic. The Columbiana County Park District Board of Commissioners decided that due to uncertainties surrounding social gatherings that it would not hold the tournament this year. It is hoped that the event will be held again in spring 2021.
No fall sports at YSU
The Horizon League, which includes Youngstown State University, has joined the list of conferences postponing all fall sports competition due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The decision impacts men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, and volleyball. It also impacts women’s golf, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, spring sports that also have preseason competitions in the fall.
The Horizon League’s board of directors and council will decide later whether fall sports competition can take place in the spring instead. Individual league members will make decisions on training, practice and recruiting in accordance with NCAA regulations, as well as state and local guidelines.
Pirates bash Reds
CINCINNATI (AP) — Adam Frazier hit the first of three homers off Anthony DeSclafani, who hasn’t beaten Pittsburgh in his last seven tries, and the Pirates returned from a three-day layoff with a flourish, beating the Cincinnati Reds 9-6 Thursday night.
Pittsburgh’s three-game series in St. Louis was called off because of the Cardinals’ COVID-19 outbreak. The Pirates showed no rust against a pitcher they’ve dominated.
