Mount Union wraps up OAC

TIFFIN – The 10th-ranked Mount Union wrestling team won the Ohio Athletic Conference title outright with a 25-18 victory at Heidelberg in a conference dual Tuesday at Seiberling Gymnasium.

Sophomore Landon Talbert picked up a bonus point for the Raiders in a 10-2 major decision victory at 197 pounds. Talbert was a state qualifier at Crestview High School.

The Purple Raiders finish 7-0 in conference duals to claim their 16th conference title and are 15-3 overall with 13 straight conference dual wins dating back to the 2017-18 season.

State CC draws 11,915 fans

COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Association Board of Directors released attendance and financial figures for the 2019 cross country, field hockey, girls tennis and soccer tournaments on Thursday.

The cross country regional tournaments drew 14,062 fans and the state championships drew 11,915 fans. The two weekends resulted in proceeds of $54,570. The field hockey state tournament drew 1,238 fans and resulted in proceeds of $3,131. The golf state tournaments drew 4,195 fans and resulted in a loss of $47,747. The soccer regional tournaments drew 32,101 fans and the state tournament (semifinals and finals) drew 21,805 fans. The two weeks resulted in proceeds of $214,347. The girls tennis state tournament drew 1,049 fans and resulted in a loss of $1,978. The volleyball regional tournaments drew 24,384 fans and the state tournament drew 14,327 fans. The two weeks resulted in proceeds of $88,474

Quakers play Saturday night

SALEM — The Salem girls basketball team will host Youngstown Chaney in a Division II sectional opener at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cabas Gymnasium.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students.

Buffone scores 14

Leetonia’s Anna Buffone scored 14 points in Wednesday’s 51-33 win over Campbell Memorial, not 11 as reported.

Salem girls softball

SALEM — The Salem Parks and Recreation Department, 2222 Oak St., will be holding in person Girl’s Fast Pitch Softball signups from 5-7 p.m. Feb. 20.

The league is for girls ages 6-15. If this is the first year your child will be playing please bring their birth certificate.

Salem drops West Branch

SALEM — The Salem middle school wrestling team closed out its dual meet season with a 68-11 win over West Branch on Wednesday.

The victory was highlighted by a streak of seven straight pins by Salem’s David Mayhew, Ryen Crowe, Karlie Stith, Aidan Lucci, Brayden Martin, Trenton McCoy and Julian Gomez.

Other winners for the Quakers were Emma Kozma, Cyle Burt, Shawn German, Aiden Stecker, Joey Kana, Dom Jezek and Karlie Stith.
