CAMPBELL — The Heartland Christian girls basketball team wanted to get the suspense out of the way early Wednesday.

Heartland senior Sydney Ogden scored her 1,000th career point on a free throw in the first quarter and finished with 22 points, but the Lions lost to Campbell Memorial, 50-43.

“We knew going in she had to get two points for 1,000,” Heartland coach Jennah Honeycutt said. “We came into the game and the first order was to get her those two points. We wanted to get that done. Her teammates wanted to do that for her.”

Heartland drops to 5-9 on the season. The Lions had just beaten Campbell, 40-25, on Jan. 13.

Senior Indian Armour-Clark topped the Red Devils with 21 points. Leila Kamal added 10 points.

Madi Matthews backed Ogden with 11 points. Ogden made 8 of 10 free throws in her 22-point effort and her career total stands at 1,020 points.

“She’s definitely a vital part of our team,” Honeycutt said.

All you have to know is she was out sick for the United game and the Lions lost 70-7.

“She does a lot,” Honeycutt said. “Obviously scoring, but she is a huge support to the other girls. She has been doing that for the varsity team for four years straight.”

Heartland will host Lowellville at 1 p.m. Saturday.
