Indians learning to win

SALINEVILLE–The Southern girls basketball team exploded in the second half to win its first game of the season with a 50-42 overtime victory over Wellsville Monday.

Erin Boyle powered the Indians (1-11) with a triple-double. Boyle finished the night with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals.

After going scoreless for the first three quarters, Makayla Crow scored eight points in the fourth quarter and five points in overtime to finish with a career-high 13 points for the Indians.

Taylor Cunningham added 11 points, while Ronni Mayfield added a career high eight points and four steals.

Wellsville led 20-10 at halftime, but the Indians outscored the Tigers 15-10 in the third quarter, 11-6 in the fourth quarter and 14-6 in overtime.

Hunter Weekley led the Tigers with 15 points and seven rebounds. Leah Vinton added nine points. Cameron Carlevale had eight points and six steals.

Southern hosts Edison Wednesday. Wellsville hosts Columbiana Thursday.

Leetonia 37, United 26

LEETONIA–The Leetonia girls basketball team toppled United 37-26 in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference action Monday.

The Bears improve to 7-5 overall.

Taran Ferry and Samantha Schneider each scored nine points to lead Leetonia. Schneider added eight rebounds. Anna Buffone had eight points, four steals and four assists.

Bailey Boosz and Morgan Hovorka each scored seven points for the Eagles. Celeste Hofmeister had four steals.

United won the jv game 35-21. Madison Kibler had 11 points for the Eagles. Katie Soupal, Molly Gibson and McKendra Cole each had four points for Leetonia.

Leetonia is at East Palestine Thursday. United hosts Southern Thursday.

BERLIN CENTER–The Western Reserve girls basketball team opened the second half of its conference schedule with a 66-34 rout over jackson-Milton Monday.

The Blue Devils improve to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference.

Dani Vuletich led the way with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Olivia Pater added nine points and six rebounds, while Kennedy Miller had seven assists. Alyssa Serensky finished with eight points.

Western Reserve won the jv game 40-21. Madison Leone led the Blue Devils with 10 points. Raelynn Meyer added nine points.

RICHMOND –Winning is getting contagious for the East Liverpool girls basketball team.

The Potters dialed in another win on Monday by downing Edison 56-29 in Buckeye 8 Athletic League play.

Emma Ludwig led the Potters (8-4) with 16 points. Mikayla Reed added 12 points, all coming from threes. Ciara Peachey had 10 points.

The Potters will be at Alliance on Wednesday.

GREENFORD — Poland got 19 points from Jackie Grisdale as the Bulldogs outlasted South Range 51-35 on Monday in Northeast 8 action.

Lexi Giles had 13 points for the Raiders, while Izzy Lamparty added 12 points.

Beaver Local 55, Buckeye 23

RAYLAND — Beaver Local got 25 points, nine rebounds, eight steals and four assists from Jenna Riccardo in a 55-23 romp over Buckeye Local in Buckeye 8 play on Monday.

Eli Kolkowski added 13 points and four boards, while Madison Cline had six points and six rebounds.

The Beaver jayvee team also won 36-24. Jordan Palmer had 17 points for the winners.

Beaver Local hosts Edison on Thursday.
