Indians pull away from Devils on way to 8-0 start

SALINEVILLE–The Southern boys basketball team overcame a one-point halftime deficit and pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 64-50 win over Lisbon Friday.

The Indians are now 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference. The Blue Devils fall to 2-5 and 2-1 EOAC.

Cam Grodhaus led the way for Southern with 19 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Bradly Sloan had 16 points , 10 rebounds and two blocks and Brock Smalley 15 points and two assists. Jayce Sloan collected eight rebounds and three steals and Sam May also made three steals.

Blayne Brownfield led the Blue Devils with 17 points. Joey Fisher had nine points and six rebounds, while Kaden Crawford had eight points and six rebounds.

Southern won the JV game 44-22. Brady Ketchum led the Indians with 14 points, Hunter Sturgeon had 11 points for Lisbon.

Lisbon is at Valley Christian Monday, while Southern travels to Leetonia on Jan. 7.

HANOVERTON–Columbiana rolled over United 85-38 in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference boys basketball action Friday.

Carter Pasco led the Clippers with 16 points, while Matt Mazei had 12 points and Hunter Zentner had nine points and six rebounds. Eleven different players scored for Columbiana.

Steffen Jarrett and Nevin Hahlen each had eight points for the Eagles.

Columbiana won the JV game 72-45. Ashton Kakavros had 19 points for the Clippers. Kaleb Nastari had 18 points for the Eagles.

WELLSVILLE — Beaver Local went on a 49-15 run in the second half to cruise past Wellsvlle, 74-36, Friday.

The Beavers led 25-21 at halftime before pulling away with the big second half.

Luke Chetock led the way with a game-high 19 points. Josh Hilditch added 12 points, Tate Joseph nine nd Skylar Pappas and Nathan Barber had eight apiece.

For the Tigers (1-3), Luke Green had 12 points and seen rebounds and Justin Wright 11 points and five rebounds.

Beaver Local also won the junior varsity game, 26-25, in two quarters as Brady Smith scored 10 points.

Beaver Local will play Ellwood City (Pa.) at 6 p.m. today at the East Palestine Border Bottle, while Wellsville meets Conotton Valley at Toronto on Dec. 28.

COLUMBIANA — Leetonia was 14-of-14 from the foul line, including 9-of-9 in the fourth quarter, to pull out a 49-45 win over Heartland Christian on Friday.

Ian Davis led the Bears with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Dylan Lennon added 11 points, Timmy Finch eight and Jordan Baker seven, including 5-of-5 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Cade Roth paced Heartland with 18 points, including four three-pointers in the final period. Joey Donofrio contributed 12 points.

Both teams play next Friday with Leetonia at the Lordstown Invitational and Heartland travels to Crestview for the Rebel Holiday Tournament.

HUBBARD–The South Range boys basketball team held off Hubbard 68-64 in Northeast 8 Athletic League action Friday.

Chris Brooks tallied 29 points to lead the Raiders, while Dante DiGaetano added 12 points. Jake Gehring finished with nine points.

South Range won the JV game 45-23.

BERLIN CENTER–The Western Reserve boys basketball team fell to Mineral Ridge 62-56 in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference action Friday.

Ryan Gordon had 17 points for the Blue Devils (4-3, 1-2 MVAC), while Todd Henning had 11 points and Noah Klasic had 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Rams improve to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the MVAC.

Mineral Ridge won the JV game 43-35. David Altiere had 8 points for Western Reserve.

SEBRING–The Sebring boys basketball team rolled over Jackson-Milton 77-54 in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference boys basketball action.

The Trojans are now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the MVAC. Jackson-Milton drops to 3-4, 0-4.

The Trojans featured four players in double figures with Frankie Lozoya totaling a career-high 20 points, Jake Hunter 14 points and seven assists, Dylan Johnson 12 points and Connor Shepherd 11 points. Matt Byrd grabbed six rebounds.

Jackson-Milton won the JV game 53-37.

Sebring will host Liberty on Monday.
