Purple Raiders top OAC polls

CANTON– Mount Union’s football team topped both Ohio Athletic Conference media and coaches preseason polls announced Tuesday at OAC Football Media Day at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.

Mount Union garnered nine of 10 first place votes in the coaches poll and 26 of the 27 first place votes in the media poll. The other first place votes in the coaches poll went to John Carroll — ranked second in both polls.

The Purple Raiders went 14-1 last season, won their record 29th OAC title and advanced to the NCAA Division III National Championship game –the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for a record 21st time.

“We appreciate the respect that coaches and the media in the OAC have for our program,” said seventh-year head coach Vince Kehres. “We also know that playing in this conference is a tremendous challenge week in and week out.”

The 2019 season begins Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. against Rose-Hulman (Ind.) in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The football team opens preseason camp on Aug. 15. Photo day/media day will be held at 8 a.m. on Aug. 24 at Mount Union Stadium.
