East Liverpool Hall of Fame to induct 12
EAST LIVERPOOL — The East Liverpool High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is pleased to announce the 2017 and 2018 classes will be officially inducted on a ceremony scheduled for September 7 at the East Liverpool High School cafeteria. Inductees will also be presented to the public at the home football game versus Indian Creek scheduled for Friday, September 6 at Patterson Field. Inductee bios are as follows;
HOF Class of 2017
Barry Berman (Class of 1951) — Barry is the first Senior Era inductee, and was a noteworthy multiple-sport athlete, excelling in basketball, track, and cross-country. Barry was a named Most Outstanding Senior and was the Hi-Y Award winner for the 1950-51 Sectional Champion basketball team. He also placed fifth individually in the state in cross-country as a senior on the 1950 Potters team that finished first overall in the state. Barry continued his athletic career at on the track team Northwestern University, and is also a member of the Western Pennsylvania Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
Dave Zelch (Class of 1960) — Dave is the second Senior Era inductee, selected as a three-year letterman for the Potters football team. In 1959, Dave was named the area’s top defensive player as he helped the Potters upset No. 2 state-ranked Warren Harding. He was selected to play in the All-County All-Star game at Patterson Field that season en route to receiving the coaches Merit Award as a senior. Dave continued his football career at the University of Miami (Florida) as a defensive back for the Hurricanes.
Joe Porter (Class of 1979) — Joe is considered one of the greatest multi-sport athletes in Potter history, particularly excelling on the football field. As a three-year starter, Joe was named second team All-State by the Ohio United Press International, as well as being named first team All-District, All-OVAC, and All-Area. Joe continued his football career at Colorado State University, where he was twice named All-Western Athletic Conference.
Chris Chavis (Class of 1986) — Chris is one of the most athletic individuals to ever wear a Potter uniform, excelling in both track and basketball. A four-year letterman in track, he held the record for the 100 meter dash for 29 years with a time of 10.9. On the basketball court, he was named Honorable Mention All-State as well as the All-Area Player of the Year. He was an alternate for the prestigious North/South All-State Basketball Game. Chris continued his basketball career at Panhandle State in Oklahoma.
Kelly Kiger (Class of 2012) — Kelly is regarded as the most accomplished volleyball player in East Liverpool High School history, being named the Area Player of the Year three times. She received All-State recognition all four years as a member of the Potters volleyball team, twice being named the All-Ohio Player of the Year. She holds the East Liverpool High School school records for kills (1232) and attacks (2144). Kelly continued her volleyball career at Cleveland State where she became an All-Horizon League performer.
Mark Montgomery (Class of 2003) — Mark is noted as one of the greatest distance runners in East Liverpool High School history. Mark is the only six-time winner in the history of the Columbiana County Cross Country Meet, and was named the Columbiana County Runner of the Year each year of his high school career. In 2002, he was the OVAC and Greater Suburban League champion, and has the fastest 5K time in East Liverpool High School history with a time of 15:46. He is a member of the East Liverpool High School school record 4 x 800 relay team, and was the county champion in the 3200 meter run. After graduation he was involved with the Pegasus program.
Scott Thornberry (Class of 1975) — Coach Thornberry is this year’s only Special Category inductee, selected as the most decorated track and cross-country coach in East Liverpool High School history. Coach Thornberry has guided the Potters to 1201 career wins during his tenure. His cross-country teams brought home 18 county championships and four OVAC titles. He coached a total of 8 student-athletes who were state qualifiers, including one state champion. He was named Columbiana County Coach of the Year 13 times, and was the Evening Review All-Area Coach of the Year 25 times. He was given the Ohio Association of Cross-Country and Track Coaches Longevity Award for 71 combined seasons as a coach.
HOF Class of 2018
Josh Ludwig (Class of 2000) — Josh is an accomplished Potter football player, being a three-time letter winner on his way to being named first team All-Area, All-OVAC, All Quad-County, and All-Eastern District. Josh was also named The Review All-Area Player of the Year and Second Team All-State Division II on the 1999 team that were the only OVAC champs in East Liverpool High School history. He played in the Penn-Ohio and OVAC All-Star games before continuing his football career at Mount Union, where he was a member of the 2002 NCAA Division III National Championship team that has since been inducted into the NCAA Hall of Fame. Josh is currently the head coach for your East Liverpool Potters football team.
Robert “Moose” Ramsey (Class of 1987) — Moose is a standout two-sport athlete for the Potters in both football and wrestling. On the football field, Moose was a three-year letterman who was also named Special Mention All-State. He was also named first team All-OVAC on his way to playing in the North/South All-Ohio game. On the wrestling mat, he was a three-year starter with 87 career wins and was named first team All-Area and All-County. Moose is currently the head football coach at neighboring Wellsville High School.
Whittni Davidson-Adkins (Class of 2012) — Whittni is a notable two-sport athlete, excelling in both basketball and volleyball at East Liverpool High School. A four-year letter winner in each sport, on the basketball court she was named first team All-Area, All-OVAC, All-Quad County, and All-Eastern District. On the volleyball court, she was a member of the 2010 undefeated team while being named Honorable Mention All-Ohio, as well as first team All-OVAC and All-Area. She hold the East Liverpool High School school record for points and sets.
Amy Hutchman-Miller (Class of 1985) — Amy is an accomplished multi-sport athlete, with many honors in her two primary sports of basketball and track. On the hardwood, she was named first team All-Area, All-County, All-Eastern District, and third team All-Ohio. She also led the Eastern Buckeye League in scoring and rebounding. On the track, she was the county champion in the high jump, breaking the East Liverpool High School school record at the time en route to being named first team All-Eastern District.
Rob Green (Class of 2000) — Rob is one of the winningest athletes in East Liverpool High School history, having played a major role on many state ranked Potter teams during his career. Rob was twice named Special Mention All-Ohio as a key member of the 1999 Final Four basketball team. He was also named first team All-Area and All-Eastern District during his basketball career. On the football field, Rob was a two-year letterman for the state ranked Potter team that made a playoff appearance. He continued his basketball career at both Edinboro and Ashland where has was an All-PSAC performer.
