Stokes adds AAU title

ORLANDO, Fla. — Oak Glen’s Skye Stokes helped her Amateur Athletic Union volleyball team capture a national championship earlier this week at the 46th annual AAU Junior Volleyball National Championships at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Stokes’ Mintonette m.71 team started off its time in Florida with victories international scrimmages against teams from Puerto Rico, Columbia and China.

When it came time for the national championship tournament, Mintonette rolled through the first three days of competition without dropping a game, advancing to the championship match last Monday against Top Select 17 Elite Blake from Florida.

The championship match was broadcast live on ESPN3 and saw Mintonette drop the first game 17-25 before roaring back to win the next two 25-19 and 15-10 to claim the title. The victory sent them to the World Championship match against Club Dominican Republic. Mintonette was finally defeated in the World Championship match 25-17, 17-25, 15-9.

Stokes, who has committed to play volleyball at West Virginia, will be back in action with her team at the USA Volleyball National Championship Monday in Indianapolis.
