Marx best in the Midwest meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Fresh off her Division II state runner-up finish, Salem senior discus thrower Caitlyn Marx finished off her high school career on top of the podium.

Marx won the girls discus Saturday at the Midwest Meet of Champions, which pits the best senior track and field athletes from Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan against each other.

The Columbiana County record holder had a winning toss was 146-feet-2 — only one thrower threw further at the OHSAA state meet last weekend. The second-place finisher at 141-8 was Birmingham Seaholm’s Macayla Rawls, who placed third in the Michigan High School Athletic Association meet.

Carrollton’s Alivia Bentley was second in the girls shot put (43-feet-9 1/4). Bentley was the Ohio Division I state champion in 2018 and the state runner-up in 2019.

Howland’s Vincent Mauri won the 3200-meter run on Saturday in 9 minutes, 8.22 seconds. It was half a second off his Division I state championship time from last Saturday.

Toledo’s Jacob Harris, who finished second to Mauri at the state meet, finished second again (9:10.75) on Saturday.
