Annarella started with Potters

AUSTINTOWN — Former East Liverpool coach and current Austintown Fitch head football coach Phil Annarella was found dead in his home Saturday.

A family member reportedly checked on him at his Niles home after Annarella did not show up as a volunteer at a Special Olympics event in Austintown Saturday.

Annarella had a career coaching record of 246-146-1 during his career than spanned five decades.

A 1966 graduate of Union High School in New Castle, Pa., Annarella began his coaching career in 1970 in East Liverpool. He served as an assistant for six years before accepting the head coaching position at Youngstown Rayen.

He moved onto Warren Western Reserve, where he was defensive coordinator for three years and became head coach in 1981. In 1990, he was named head coach of newly-consolidated Warren Harding High School. From 1988-91, his teams went 40-5 with three playoff appearances and a Division I state championship in 1990.

He also coached at Hickory (Pa.) and Niles before being named head coach at Austintown Fitch in 2007.
