Ballpark mustard drops Wahoo

CLEVELAND (AP) — The maker of Cleveland’s ballpark mustard is removing the Chief Wahoo logo from its branding and packaging to maintain longstanding ties with the Cleveland Indians baseball team.

Cleveland.com reports the Indians have told official partners like Bertman Foods Co., the maker of Bertman Original Ballpark Mustard, those relationships can’t continue unless they stop using Chief Wahoo. The caricature is widely seen as racist and offensive to Native Americans.

The Indians will stop using Chief Wahoo on player uniforms starting this season. The club had been phasing out the logo for years and struck an agreement with Major League Baseball last year to discontinue its use altogether.

The team will continue to sell a few Chief Wahoo items at team shops to retain its trademark.

Oak Glen wraps up season

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — The Weir High girls basketball team knows its role, where to position itself and is consistent with its game plan.

During the West Virginia Class AA Region 1, Section 1 play-in contest against Oak Glen on Saturday, the Red Riders utilized their strategy to a 54-30 victory.

The Golden Bears (10-13) won the first matchup, 52-44, on Dec. 10 at home. The Red Riders (7-14) took the second, 71-42, on their home court on Jan. 14.

For Oak Glen, it had to play without senior and leading scorer Maggie Kovalcik. She sprained her ankle and partially tore a ligament on Monday at East Liverpool. She is expected to return for track and field this spring.

Reece Enochs led the Golden Bears (10-13) with 15 points. Maddie McKay collected seven rebounds and an assist. Izzy Barganski had four points and four boards.

“That’ll be our team for next year. You usually don’t a preview of what your team will be like next year, but we got that preview,” Oak Glen coach Scott Wiley said. “We got a lot of things to work on, like getting beat by 20 points to your rival. If that doesn’t get you motivated to work in the summer, then I don’t know what will. I also told them that the coaches aren’t going to leave, so there were positives from tonight.”

Davis finds himself in spotlight

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Anthony Davis isn’t completely sure if he’s going to play in Sunday’s All-Star game. He doesn’t know how much the New Orleans Pelicans will have him play the rest of this season. Or where he’ll play next season. Or where he’ll play the season after that, either.

So Davis, obviously, has a lot of questions.

At All-Star media day, he also had some answers.

Yes, Davis wants to keep playing through the end of the season with New Orleans. No, he didn’t eliminate Boston from the list of cities where he would consider playing. Yes, he will test the free agent market in the summer of 2020. And above all else, big market or small market, he insists that having a chance to win is all that matters going forward. “It’s time to go play ball,” Davis said. “That’s what I’m trying to do.”

Davis — provided a shoulder strain doesn’t keep him out — will finally be LeBron James’ teammate tonight.
