Blue Devils turn up the pressure

LISBON — Lisbon’s girls basketball team put the pressure on Wellsville in its 62-25 Div. IV sectional opener win on Wednesday.

Izzy Perez led the attack with 18 points, six assists and six steals. Chloe Smith added 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and six steals.

Perez has 355 steals for her career which is a school record. Karlee Pezzano held the old mark of 251 steals.

Cadee Johnson added 12 points, while Maddie Liberati had 10 points and eight boards.

Lisbon (17-6) will host Jackson-Milton at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the sectional final.

Lisbon ended its regular season with a 57-55 win at Jackson-Milton on Feb. 14.

Hunter Weekley led the Tigers (3-20) with 10 points. Cameron Carlevale added five rebounds and four assists.

COLUMBIANA — Crestview senior Haley Eskra set the school’s single-season three-point record as the Rebels rolled over Waterloo, 55-33, in a Division III sectional opener Wednesday.

Eskra had six three-pointers for 20 points to go along with five steals and three assists. She has 13 three-pointers over the last two games to give her 48 on the season, breaking the school mark of 47 set by Emily Ferris.

The Rebels raced out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter and widened the margin to 31-10 at halftime.

Payton Huff added 13 points and six rebounds and Tanner Hoffer 10 points, six rebounds and six steals. Krista Perry had seven points, five rebounds, three assists and three blocks and Mara Halas dished out five assists.

Crestview improves to 17-6, while Waterloo finishes at 7-15. The Rebels will play at Ravenna Southeast in the sectional final at 1 p.m. Saturday.

HANOVERTON — Springfield scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and survived 6-of-19 free throw shooting to beat United, 38-31, in a Division III sectional opener Wednesday.

Ellie Centofanti led the Tigers with a game-high 13 points. Makenzy Capouellez added 10 points.

The Eagles were led by Celeste Powers and Celeste Hofmeister with seven points apiece. Loren Swords followed with six.

United finishes the season with an 11-12 record.

Springfield will play at top-seeded Salem at 1 p.m. Saturday.

ZANESVILLE — Beaver Local’s girls basketball team faced the wrath of the Ohio High School Athletic Association mercy rule in its 84-39 loss to Zanesville Maysville in a Div. II sectional final on Wednesday.

The rule, implemented in 2017, states that if a team is down by 30 points or more at the half a running clock is implemented.

The Beavers trailed 55-13 at the half to the Panthers who were the third seed in the tournament.

Beaver Local was the 12th seed and finished the season 14-9.

Maysville advances to host Dover at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Maysville’s Macie Jarrett went over 1,000 points for her career in the win.

Lordstown 57, Heartland Christian 31

LORDSTOWN — Lordstown defeated Heartland Christian, 57-31, in a Division IV sectional tournament opener TWednesday.

Sixth-seeded Lordstown advances to play at third-seeded Brookfield in the sectional final at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Minerva 40,

John Glenn 34

MINERVA — Minerva’s girls basketball team hosted a tournament game for the first time and did in John Glenn 40-34 on Wednesday in a Div. II sectional game.

Elyssa Imler led the Lions with 14 points, while Addie Rhodes had 11 points.

Minerva will host Philo at 2 p.m. Saturday in the sectional final.
