Beavers open in EOWL

HOWLAND–Beaver Local opened the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League schedule with a 62-10 win over Howland on Saturday.

“Wins in the EOWL are hard to come by, our kids handled the environment and the early start time appropriately,” Beaver Local coach Jordan Williams said. “I am proud of them and their effort. Austin Ferguson stood out, winning a close hard fought match. He responded well to adversity and pulled out a win for his team. He showed a lot of grit and determination. It was a good win for us.”

The Beavers are back in action Saturday when they host the 41st annual Hoppel Invitational. Action begins at 9 a.m., with the finals set to begin at approximately 5 p.m.

Ironman Tournament

CUYAHOGA FALLS–The area had one wrestler place Saturday at the prestigious Ironman Tournament at Walsh Jesuit High School.

The tournament features wrestlers from 20 states including Hawaii and is known as one of the toughest in the country.

Oak Glen’s Peyton Hall finished the tournament 5-2 and took seventh place in the 138-pound bracket. Shawn Moore and Jonathan Creese each went 0-2.

Oak Glen will be back in action Thursday at East Liverpool.

Beaver Local’s Beau Smith also advanced to Saturday. He won his first match of the day and lost the second to finish the weekend with a record of 3-2.

Barnesville Doan Ford Invitational

BARNESVILLE — West Branch’s Christian Wayt emerged as the 120-pound champion at the Barnesville Doan Ford Invitational Saturday.

Wayt took down Huntington’s London Bowen with an 8-0 major decision in the championship match.

The Warriors took fourth place as a team with 151 points. Indian Valley won the team title with 227 1/2 points. East Liverpool was 17th with 63 points.

Also for West Branch, Kenny Marra was the runner-up in the 195-pound bracket. Marra was pinned by Drake Dobson from Martins Ferry at the 1:24 mark in the championship match.

West Branch’s Neil Ginnetti took third in the 182-pound bracket by pinning Richard McFarland from Martins Ferry at the 0:44 mark. Jacob Hurst earned a third-place finish for West Branch in the heavyweight competition. Hurst pinned Claymont’s Cameron Brown at the 1:10 mark.

East Liverpool’s Skylor Wooley wrestled his way to a third-place finish in the 220-pound bracket. Wooley pinned Mercer’s P.J. Boggs at the 2:30 mark of the consolation finals.

Also for the Potters, 120-pounder Howard Williams earned a fourth-place finish. Williams dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Coshocton’s Austin Guthrie in the consolation finals.
