Minerva seeks football coach

MINERVA — The resignation of Minerva head football coach Lance Willison was accepted at Monday’s board of education meeting.

The Lions were 0-30 in Willison’s three seasons as head coach. He served the previous years on the Minerva staff, mostly as a defensive assistant and defensive coordinator at his alma mater.

“Coach Willison is great for our kids and went beyond coaching by teaching his athletes to be quality citizens in our community,” Superintendent Gary Chaddock said. “He is an outstanding person and hopefully will stay involved in football at some level. A good coach can change a game. A great coach can change a life.”

Willison will continue as the guidance counselor at Minerva Middle School. He and his wife reside in Minerva with their two children.

Minerva is accepting applications through Dec. 7. Candidates can send a resume and cover letter to Athletic Director Andrew Mangun, Minerva High School, 501 Almeda Ave., Minerva, Ohio 44657 or manguna@minerva.sparcc.org.

Jackson tries to beat Browns

CINCINNATI (AP) — Bengals coach Marvin Lewis shut down the question immediately, making it clear he won’t be talking about the latest addition to his staff — one who’s in an unusual position to influence the next game.

Only last month, Hue Jackson was Cleveland’s head coach, intimately involved in the Browns’ game planning. Now he’s on the Bengals sideline with Lewis, trying to beat the Browns on Sunday — a sensitive subject that the head coach is trying to put off limits.

“I think I’ve answered enough Hue questions, OK?” Lewis said Wednesday with an edge to his tone. “We’re done. We’re over.”

Oh, no. The intrigue is just getting started.

Crosby’s back to help Penguins

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby’s been around long enough to realize the issues currently plaguing the Pittsburgh Penguins can’t be solved in one shift, one period or even one game.

That sure didn’t stop the Pittsburgh captain from trying. Crosby scored a spectacular goal and set up two others during a 5-1 victory over Dallas on Wednesday night in his return to the lineup after missing three games with an upper-body injury.

“I think our team gets a foot taller when he’s in our lineup because of the inspiration that he is for our group,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said.
