Opening day totals fall off steeply

COLUMBUS — Hunters checked 13,614 white-tailed deer on Monday’s opening day of Ohio’s deer-gun hunting season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The statewide total was steeply down from 22,366 in 2017.

In Columbiana County 269 deer were taken which down from 453 on 2017’s opening day. In Mahoning County hunters took 144 deer on opening day which was down from 209 a year ago.

There is still time to get out and enjoy Ohio’s deer-gun season, which remains open through Sunday. Two additional days of deer-gun season (Dec. 15-16) have been added to increase the opportunity for people to hunt with firearms.
