Bears are golden in state bid

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. — The end result was not what the Oak Glen volleyball team wanted, but the ultimate goal is still a possibility.

Philip Barbour played with a great amount of urgency and intensity Saturday, and it paid off in a major way, as the Colts claimed the West Virginia Class AA Region 1 championship by sweeping East Fairmont and Oak Glen at the Oak Glen Fieldhouse.

Philip Barbour defeated East Fairmont, the runner-up in Section 2 to Oak Glen, 25-9, 25-11, 25-9, in the regional semifinals, setting up the title match against Oak Glen. The Colts got off to a fast start against the Golden Bears, and Philip Barbour staged an improbable rally in the second game, en route to a 25-14, 29-27, 25-15 victory.

“They were on,” Oak Glen interim head coach Elyssa Greathouse said about Philip Barbour. “They were really on their game. Their librero is really good. We have a lot of practice to do this week.”

By winning the regional title, the Colts (40-10-2) wrapped up a spot in the state tournament beginning Friday and ending Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center. A blind draw will be held on Monday to determine state pairings.

“It feels really good,” Philip Barbour coach Heather Halfin said. “Every year we start slow. This year was no exception. The girls promised me we would get better, and we have. I see it every year. We want to keep the momentum going. We want to do big things down in Charleston. We have the talent and the heart. We definitely have a shot at winning the title.”

Oak Glen (40-4-1) swept Frankfort, the runner-up in Section 1, 25-14, 25-16, 25-15, in the regional semifinals, giving the Golden Bears a berth in the state tournament.

“We played really well,” Greathouse said. “All of the girls were on. We were very fluid. We played together.”

Oak Glen played a strong match against Frankfort, but the Golden Bears struggled in their loss to the Colts.

Individually for Oak Glen in the finals, Hannah Rogers recorded six points, four aces, 18 spikes, 10 kills, one block and four digs. McKayla Goodlin delivered five points, five spikes, four kills and six digs. Jaedyn Hissam scored two points to go along with 83 sets, 23 assists, three spikes and four digs. Alyna Kranis contributed two points, 11 spikes, six kills and one block. Jadyn Smith added one dig, and Brittney Giorgini ended up with two points and one dig.

“They are so powerful,” Halfin said. “They got some lefties. I don’t know how they are lucky enough to have so many lefties. They have some lefties who can pound the ball.

“Whenever we play, it is a battle. I’m sure the fans enjoy it, but it is tough a match to coach through.”

For Philip Barbour, McKenzie Carpenter collected 13 points, four aces, 17 kills and 11 digs. Riley Domingues delivered six points, one ace and 13 assists. Emma Kennedy ended up with seven points, and one ace. Maddy Jones scored six points to go along with 26 digs. Jyra Casto recorded 14 kills and 10 blocks. Taylor Mayle tallied 20 assists. Kilea Price produced 14 digs, and Alyssa Hill added five kills.

The Golden Bears scored the first point of the first game against the Colts, but Oak Glen never led again. The Colts pulled away for an 11-point victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second game was a battle from start to finish.

Oak Glen was able to take an 18-13 lead. The hosts later led 22-18, forcing Philip Barbour to call timeout. The Golden Bears led 24-20, and it appeared as if they were going to get right back into the match, but the Colts collected the next five points to take a 25-24 lead.

Oak Glen responded by scoring the next two points to give themselves another game point, but Philip Barbour was once again able to score the next point to tie the game. The victors took a 27-26 lead, but the Golden Bears battled and scored the next point to stay alive in the game. The Colts, however, scored the final two points to win the game and to take a 2-0 lead.

“To go down and be able to come back like that was huge,” Halfin said. “I haven’t seen that all year. That was big.”

Philip Barbour got off to a good start in the third game, and Oak Glen was never able to fully recover. The Colts went on to win the game by 10 points to win the match, 3-0.

“I’m not sure who we will play in the state tournament,” Greathouse said. “I know we will play the winner of one of the regions.”

The Colts are the third team to beat the Golden Bears this season. Two of Oak Glen’s losses came at the hands of rival East Liverpool, while the other loss and the tie came against Bridgeport, W.Va.
