South Range falls; Springfield advances

GREENFORD — South Range’s softball team had the top seed in the Division III district tournament, but Waterloo had other plans.

The fifth-seeded Vikings pushed across four runs late to upset the Raiders 4-3 in a district semifinal on Monday at South Range High School.

South Range ends its season at 18-7.

Waterloo, the fifth seed, shared the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference title with Springfield.

The Vikings (16-3) advance to meet the Tigers at 5 p.m. today in the final at South Range High School. Springfield topped Girard 9-5 in the day’s other district semifinal.

Julie Centofanti had an RBI double for the Raiders. Drew Feren also had a double. Hanna Dennison had a double while Hope Thomas had an RBI.

South Range led 3-0 in the sixth before the Vikings’ scored two in that inning to pull within one.

With two outs in the seventh, South Range opted to intentionally walk Waterloo’s potent slugger Amber Cieplinski to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

Machayla Kehrer later delivered a two-run single to push Waterloo ahead.

Springfield 9, Girard 5

GREENFORD –Jacqueline Kish had a double, single and three RBIs to lead Springfield’s softball team to a 9-5 win over Girard in a Division III district semifinal on Monday at South Range High School.

Springfield (20-3) will meet Waterloo at 5 p.m. today in the district final.

Mya Duskey chipped in with a triple and a single as well as an RBI. Cassie Bacon hit a pair of singles and drove in two. Abby Joseph hit a double and a single. Makenzy Cappouellez hit a double and scored twice.

For Girard, Sophia Griffith hit a solo home run. Pitcher Samantha Dohy helped her own cause with a pair of singles.
