Rain doesn’t bother the Quakers

SALEM — The Salem boys and girls track teams flexed their muscles at the 26th annual F.E. Cope Invitational on a rainy Thursday.

The Salem boys won for the third straight year, while the Salem girls made it a sweep as junior Caitlyn Marx tied the Columbiana County discus record and junior Haley Rozeski was a triple-winner.

Marx had a winning toss of 146-feet-0 to tie the school and county record set by Alyssa Wright in 2015. Marx finished 12th at the Division II state meet last year.

The Salem girls swept the weight events at Reilly Stadium as sophomore Abbie Antram was first (38-2 1/4) and Marx second in the shot put, while freshman Kyla Jamison was second behind Marx in the discus.

That helped propel the Quakers to the girls team title with 151 1/2. Youngstown East was second with 101.

The Salem boys showed their strength by winning all four relays along with three individual events for 144 points. Akron Coventry followed with 89 points.

Salem’s Quinlan Rumsey was a repeat winner in the 400-meter dash (52.15 seconds). Teammates Trey Double in the 800 run (2:03.20) and Turner Johnson in the high jump (6-0) also were winners.

Johnson also ran on three winning relay teams, joining Josh Lehwald, Chase Ackerman and Zach Murray on the 400 relay (46.58); Seth Ameduri, Ackerman and Lehwald on the 800 relay (1:35.04); and Ackerman, Ameduri and Rumsey on the 1600 relay (3:49.41).

Rumsey, Double, Hunter Christopher and Jacob McLachlan won the 3200 relay (8:55.72).

Crestview junior Dominic Perry won the shot put (51-5 1/4) for the second straight year. Perry was third at the Division II state meet last year.

Rozeski captured the 800 run (2:31.51) and 3200 run (11:54.27) and joining Macey Austin, Abie Cochran and Halle Cochran on the winning 1600 relay team (4:36.60).

Ellie Davidson, Carly Hall, Abie Cochran and Halle Cochran were first in the 3200 relay (10:38.42) and Paige Bailey, Mackenzie Perkins, Katelin Chilton and Kelly Hutton won the 400 relay (53.79);
