Ex-Minerva teammates capture GLIAC honors

A pair of former Minerva High School teammates are teaming up again on the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football team.

Tiffin University senior Mason Butler gained second-team honors, while Ashland University senior Harrison Hoppel received honorable mention. Both are 2014 graduates of Minerva High School.

Butler, a 6-foot-3, 305-pounder, was a four-year starting starter for Tiffin. He anchored the Tiffin offensive line that helped the 6-5 Dragons average 23.8 points, 163.5 yards rushing and 366 yards of total offense a game.

Butler is a four-year All-GLIAC selection.

Hoppel, a 6-foot-2, 275-pounder, is the starting defensive tackle for 10-1 Ashland, which clinched the GLIAC outright title last Saturday.

Hoppel has 26 tackles, including five for losses, for the Ashland defense that is tied for 11th in the country by allowing 14.6 points per game.

The ninth-ranked Eagles will host 13th-ranked Northwest Missouri State in an NCAA Division II playoff opener at noon Saturday.
