SALEM — The Salem girls track team is deep and talented.

The Quakers scored in all 16 events and were in the top two in all four relays to take the team title at the Columbiana County Track and Field Meet on Tuesday.

“There was not one disappointment in any event,” Salem girls coach Amie Cochran said. “They really impressed me today.”

The Quakers captured their 18th county title with 142 1/2 points. United was second with 99 1/4 and Beaver Local third with 97 1/4.

“It’s tradition in Salem to win the county meet,” Cochran said. “It matters to the girls and especially the seniors.”

The Quakers showed of things to come as they ran away from the field Tuesday with only four seniors in the lineup.

“We finally have depth,” Cochran said. “Wait until next year.”

The Quakers are always focused on the county meet.

“We had a team dinner on Sunday and (Cochran) has been talking about it since last week,” sophomore Caitlyn Marx said.

“Winning the county meet is a big accomplishment for Salem,” Salem senior Elizabeth Aukerman said. “It always will be”

Salem featured four winners at Reilly Stadium, but the difference was scoring across the board.

“I’m super proud of them,” Cochran said. “Our field events were great today. We had a couple of girls step up at county. We always do.”

Senior Mary Double woke up Tuesday morning with the flu and didn’t know if she would be able to compete.

“I wasn’t worried,” Aukerman said. “I knew we had a lot of people who would step up. They are gutsy.”

“We’re pretty confident in our abilities,” Marx said.

Double won the long jump (15-6 1/2) and was sixth in the 200 dash and ran on the second-place 1600 relay team.

“Mary Double is sick with the flu,” Cochran said. “You saw what she did today.”

Marx won the discus with a personal-best toss of 139-feet-4 — the third best in school history and fifth-best in Columbiana County history.

She also was third in the shot put and shared high-point honors in the field events with East Liverpool senior Lindsay Baker.

Marx and senior Helene Shontz made the difference for the Quakers in the field events. The Salem duo combined for 29 points. It gave the Quakers a big boost as United collected eight points and Beaver Local zero in those events.

“They’re just amazing,” Cochran said. “Their work ethic is unparalleled. Talent and work ethic equals success.”

“I want to keep on breaking PRs (personal records) and winning meets,” Marx said.

Other Quaker winners were Aukerman, Katelin Chilton, Lydia McKee and Mackenzie Perkins in the 800 relay (1:52.93) and Kati Johnson, Macey Austin, Chilton and Perkins in the 400 relay (53.74).

“The level of competition in the NBC gets us ready for this,” Cochran said. “We may lose a few meets, but we’re running against the Carrolltons and Marlingtons and Minerva is great this year.”

The Quakers will be hosting the Northeastern Buckeye Conference next Friday.

“It’s the fun part of the season,” Cochran said
