W. Jean McElroy

EAST PALESTINE - Wilma Jean McElroy, 82, of East Palestine, passed away at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 at Parkside Health Care Center in Columbiana, while surrounded by her sons. Jean was born on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 1930 in East Palestine, Ohio; the daughter of Raymond W. Bacon and Estella (Kuntz) Bacon. She was a graduate of New Waterford, Ohio, High School and attended Ohio State University, as well as Youngstown State University. She was a certified preschool teacher.

Jean married Robert Calvin McElroy on April 14, 1951 at First Presbyterian Church in East Palestine. Soon after marriage she was a homemaker supporting her husband while he worked and attended college. During this time Jean and Bob raised five sons: Richard, Steven, Terry, Eric and Douglas. Jean was involved with establishing the Play-N-Learn Preschool at New Waterford Presbyterian Church, becoming its teacher from 1975 to 1981. She then assisted her husband working at Safety Lift Company with her family. Upon retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. McElroy was a longtime member of New Waterford Presbyterian Church and a member of the Church Women's Association. She was also a past board member of Play-N-Learn Preschool at New Waterford Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by sons Richard (Linda), Terry, Eric (Darlene) of East Palestine, Steven (Joan) of Columbiana and Douglas of Leetonia; eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Jonathan, Jennifer, Paige, Meghan, Daniel, Bryn and Hayley McElroy; four great-grandchildren, Libby, Tucker, John Parker and Ava; as well as her sister Delores (Ed) Galbreath. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert and her parents.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013 at New Waterford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jan Douglass officiating. Calling hours will be held at Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home on Friday, March 1, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Burial will be at Glenview Cemetery.
