LISBON - Village employees and supervisors were granted their first across-the-board pay raise since 2009, following action taken at this week's council meeting.
Council voted to award 3 percent pay raises for non-elected general fund employees after the increase was recommended by the personnel committee, which met two weeks ago with some of the department supervisors to discuss the issue. Councilwoman Mary Ann Gray abstained from the vote because her sister is a dispatcher in the police department.
Prior to council's action, the Board of Public Affairs did likewise, approving a 3 percent pay raise for water and sewer department employees.
Fiscal Officer Tracey Wonner crunched the numbers to determine what impact the raises would have on the general fund, and she said the cost this year would be about $5,000.
In other personnel moves, council agreed to give a $2,000 pay raise to street foreman Jim Oliver, which he was supposed to receive when they removed the probationary tag from him in January.
Council also acted on the recommendation of police Chief Mike Abraham and added two new part-time officers to his staff: Brett Grabman of Boardman and Daric Wise Jr. of Sebring, who will make about $12 an hour following the raise.
The police department has been down a full-time position since Abraham was promoted in the fall to replace Chief John Higgins, who retired. He said council wants him to first try for a federal grant to get the money to hire a replacement before deciding to fill the vacancy.
Abraham said he needs the additional part-time officers to fill all of the shifts because of the vacancy and the unavailability of officer Dan Downard, who is under suspension pending the outcome of an investigation into the Columbiana County Drug Task Force, to which Downard had been assigned.
Council also approved the applications of two Lisbon residents as unpaid auxiliary police officers: Justin Carlisle and Robert Hunt.
