SALEM - Luster C. Mellinger, 79, died Saturday evening January 12, 2013 at Salem Community Hospital.
He was born on January 22, 1933 in North Lima, a son of Adin and Ethel (Cooley) Mellinger, and was a life-long resident of Ohio. Luster resided in Columbiana for the last 28 years having moved here from North Lima.
Luster was a 1951 graduate of North Lima High School.
Luster retired from Metal Carbides in Boardman where he worked as a furnace operator after 31 years and then worked for Ace Hardware in Columbiana, being the helpful hardware man for 22 years. He had an expansive knowledge of most things mechanical and in the field of carpentry, which endeared him greatly to all the customers at Ace Hardware. He was 100% family man and was always there for his family. He had an incredible work ethic that has passed down to all generations.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Mae McCowin, whom he married on August 10, 1951, sons Larry (Judie) of Columbiana, Robert (Nancy) of Warren, Jeff (Jeanine) of Columbiana, and daughter Judy Trussell of Columbiana; twelve grandchildren, two, Jennifer (David) and Ken of which he raised after his daughter Janis' death in 1983, Sarah, Brenda, Jessica, Erin, Megan, Larry, Angela, Kurt, Corey and Lauren; six great grandchildren, Jocelyn, Valerie, Kadin, Kaila, Jillian and Cole and also survived by sisters Yvonne Garlich, Charlotte (Bill) Evankovich, and Sue Weeden.
Luster was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, David and Willard, sister Jeanette, and daughter Janis Stephenson.
Upon Luster's wishes his body was donated to The Ohio University of Medicine.
A memorial service will be held at Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana on Saturday, January 19 at 12 noon. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
