East Palestine is very concerned

East Palestine Social Concern was started in 1965 by Evelyn Stonemetz to provide assistance for the needy in the East Palestine School District. Help is available all year for food, utilities, rent and medicine.

This all-volunteer committee depends on community support. Only one fundraiser is held, the Evelyn Stonemetz Golf Outing. Last year, $32,256.17 was spent.

Few people realize how much the people of East Palestine do to keep Social Concern operating. This Thanksgiving and Christmas season serves as a good example of community involvement. Donations of money were made by 108 and totaled $25,112.02. These were from individuals, churches, businesses, schools, organizations and former residents.

Food was collected in churches, all three schools and by the Scouts. People donated toys, baby afghans, hats, gloves, socks, baby sweaters, deodorant, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Many people donate their time to get gifts and food ready for our needy. Youth groups from area churches packed food boxes for the 170 families that needed help. Nine ladies did all of the necessary paperwork. High school students get all of the toys our for the 12 people who put them on tables for the packers.

The morning of the packing there are two shifts. Eight helpers come at 7:30 a.m. and pack for infants and ages 12-18. At 9 a.m., about 30 people come to pack for ages 2-11. Then 10 people pack family bags. This year, 333 children received gifts.

While toy packing is going on, seven men are packing bags to go with the food boxes. The day of pick-up, there are about 15 people to help.

East Palestine is truly a generous community and should be proud of the way our citizens work together to help the less fortunate. Our village knows the true meaning of Christmas. Keep up the good work. Your help is really appreciated.
