District rematch

Lady Warriors extract revenge for last year’s D-II district title loss

West Branch 59, Canfield 52

CANFIELD - West Branch and Canfield met in a rematch of last year's Division II Austintown district final Wednesday.

The Lady Warriors got a small measure of revenge with a 59-52 victory. Canfield led at half 29-28 but a 15-3 run in the third quarter gave the Lady Warriors the edge to keep the Lady Cardinals at bay.

Leading West Branch was Melinda Trimmer with 22 points including four 3-pointers. Amanda Linhart had eight points and five rebounds, and Erica Johnson added eight points.

Canfield was led by Rachel Tinkey with 13 points. Abby Baker added 12 points, and Kayla Barko pulled down nine rebounds. Senior standout Sabrina Mangapora was held to just six points on the night by the Lady Warriors defense.

Canfield won the J.V. contest 49-44 in overtime.

West Branch (3-0) plays Saturday at Louisville.

Canfield (2-1) travels to Cardinal Mooney.

Freshman Basketball

Salem vs. Carrollton

SALEM - Salem defeated Carrollton 51-28 Wednesday in freshman basketball action. D.J. Pullie had 17 points, Trey Toothman 15, Tyler Simms had six and Bryce Cooper five.

Salem (2-0, 2-0 NBC) plays at West Branch Monday.

Salem vs. Minerva

SALEM - Salem defeated Minerva Monday 34-26 in freshman basketball action.

Trey Toothman led the Quakers with 20 points. D.J. Pullie added six.

Junior High Basketball

Salem vs. Marlington

ALLIANCE - The Salem seventh grade girls fell to Marlington 47-9. Allie Davidson had eight points for Salem (0-1).

The Salem eighth grade defeated Marlington 65-29. Kasey Jamison had 20 points including six 3-pointers. Chloe Cheresney had 16 points. Colleen Shontz added 12.

Both teams host West Branch Saturday. The seventh grade game begins at 9 a.m.

West Branch vs. Carrollton

BELOIT - West Branch's seventh grade boys basketball team beat Carrollton 34-28. Ryan Timpe had 12 points. Michael Boosz added 10.

Leetonia vs. Columbiana

LEETONIA - The Leetonia seventh grade girls beat Columbiana 15-13. Aurora Smith had eight points for the Lady Bears. Alexis Cross had four for Columbiana.

The Columbiana eighth grade team defeated Leetonia 22-12. Dixon Dayton had six points for the Lady Clipes. Caitlin Lewis had four for Leetonia.

Sebring vs. Lisbon

SEBRING - The Lisbon seventh grade boys basketball team beat Sebring 36-17. Branson Brownfield had 11 points and Douglas Miner 10 for the Blue Devils. Collin Baia had seven for the Trojans.

The Lisbon eighth grade boys also beat Sebring 57-20. Colin Sweeney had 13 points, and Jake Liberati and Jason Thompson had 10. Robbie Rouse had seven for Sebring.

Lisbon travels to Southern Monday.

United vs. East Palestine

HANOVERTON - The United seventh grade girls improved to 3-0 beating East Palestine 25-13. Cami Pierson had eight points, while Molly Briceland added six.

The United eighth grade girls fell to EP 26-25. Mariah Eisenbraun had nine points for United. Ally Dunn added six.

Both teams are back in action Monday vs. South Range.
