LISBON - With more and more welders needed nationwide, the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center has been leading the way in teaching people to fill those needs.
One of the instructors, Huck Hughes, recently attended the FAB Tech international show in Las Vegas. He was asked to speak in front of a committee of education professionals about the CTC's new lab and program. This fall the program doubled in size and began teaching classes in a new welding and material joining lab. Hughes said a lot of people asked questions after his presentation about the new lab. He believes some will even be coming to Lisbon to look at the program themselves.
"The rest of the country has been looking at what we are doing here," Hughes said, adding it is a pleasure to work with great staff and administrators who keep the students in mind.
One group which reportedly took notice of Hughes' presentation is the American Welding Society. Hughes said members of the society promote welding and have asked him to speak before the U.S. Congress the next time they go to promote the profession.
Hughes said there is currently a shortage of 225,000 welders across the country. The AWS would like to see more quality educational programs and opportunities for prospective welders.
