BL opens season with win vs Champion

CALCUTTA - The Beavers opened the season with a big win.

The Beaver Local boys' basketball team jumped out to a 17-4 lead and did not look back en route to a 78-56 victory over Champion Friday night at the Beaver Dome.

The win was the Beavers (1-0) first in a season opener since defeating East Palestine in the first game of the 2004-05 season. Beaver Local has not had a winning season since the 2003-04 campaign.

"This sets the tone for the season," Beaver Local coach Jake Walgate said. "But we're not going to be satisfied to stop here. This group wants to push forward."

Troy Hudson netted a game-high 22 points to lead the way for Beaver Local. Hudson also delivered seven rebounds, five assists and one steal.

"It was an exciting game,"?Walgate said. "The guys came out ready to play. The defense really turned our offense on. Everybody had active hands and they trusted their teammates."

Also, Jared Lyder recorded 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals, Chase Hilliard delivered 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals and Zack Mick contributed nine points and eight rebounds.

Next, Josh Underwood added eight points and four rebounds, Brandon Fetty tallied four points, four assists and two steals and Matt Chamberlain collected three points.

Finally, Chandler Cornell and Ethan Campbell each contributed two points.

Beaver Local led 39-19 at halftime.

"There was so much excitement in the gym,"?Walgate said. "We had great student support and a lot of fans came out. It was definitely a live gym."

The Beavers won the JV game, 39-37.

Beaver Local plays tonight at home against United.
