BEAVER TOWNSHIP - School administrators have been proactive in seeking a solution to the South Range district's recent struggles to meet the Value Added measurement on its Ohio Department of Education local report card, according to Shari Lewis, the district's director of curriculum and special education.
Lewis Monday night told the school board that the content and grade level teams that analyze test scores used for the local report card ratings have broken down the data from the past few years to determine how each student in grades four through eight are performing on the tests, namely reading and math. She explained that students are achieving at proficient and advanced levels but are dropping percentiles within each level, which appears as no growth during evaluations.
The data will be used to develop a plan to help each student remain at a consistent performance level, schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham said.
The district dropped from an Excellent rating to Effective this year after failing to meet the Valued Added measurement for three consecutive years. It was the first time since the inception of the local report cards that the district had not been ranked Excellent.
In other business, the board approved the establishment of a Ruriteen Club for student service in both Green and Beaver Townships, working with the Greenford and Beaver Township Ruritan clubs. The board also approved an updated board policy that will be available online at the school website by February and passed a resolution recognizing all fall sports student athletes and teams.
Additionally Dunham offered condolences to the family of Pat Pilolli, a substitute bus driver who recently died following an accident at home. He also expressed appreciation for the passage of the district's renewal levy earlier this month, noting that "nothing is taken for granted in this economic climate."
An Ohio Department of Transportation public meeting to discuss the proposed turning lanes and pedestrian tunnel at the K-12 campus entrance on state Route 46 is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the K-12 cafeteria.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17 in the K-12 campus Music Room.
