Mary Sturgeon

ELKTON - Mary E. Sturgeon, 91, of State Route 154, passed away at 4:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 at Blossom Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a recent illness.

Mrs. Sturgeon was born May 15, 1921 near Lebanon, Ky., a daughter of the late Albert L. and Rosa (Raley) Cox.

Mary graduated as the 1939 class valedictorian of Leetonia High School. She then furthered her education at Capitol University in Columbus, and completed her education by earning her bachelor's degree in education from Youngstown State University. She began her teaching career as an elementary teacher at Crestview and then as a high school teacher at Southern Local and later taught Latin and English at Beaver Local High School, until her retirement in 1984.

Mary was a member of Elkton United Methodist Church, where she served as the church secretary for many years. She also served as a lay pastor at Williamsport Chapel.

Mary also served on the Columbiana County Board of Education; volunteered at HELP in Lisbon; and was well known for showing her collection of over 300 crosses to her church and other local groups.

She is survived by her husband, Franklin D. Sturgeon, whom she married July 12, 1947; daughters, Mary Jo (Louis) Sims of Yellow Springs, Ohio and Gwen Ellen (Frank) Francis of Highlandtown; son, George Franklin (Dianne) Sturgeon of Atwater, Ohio; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Louise Breeze, brother, Albert Cox, Jr. and son, Thomas Albert Sturgeon.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012 at Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home. Graveside funeral services and burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Kemble Cemetery in Elkton, State Route 154, with Pastor Kathy Barton officiating.
