Ohio would be a perfect fit for space headquarters

As the folks in Washington, D.C., search for the perfect location for the headquarters of U.S. Space Command, Ohio’s economic development organizations have teamed up to remind the Biden administration that our state would be perfect for the job.

Specifically, the group proposes Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton as the headquarters, with additional U.S. Space Force units in Ohio in partnership with the NASA John H. Glenn Research Center’s Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky. It’s a wonderful idea, and one that would draw on Ohio’s rich military and aviation history.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, was joined by the Dayton Development Coalition, Ohio Southeast, the Columbus Partnership, REDI Cincinnati, Regional Growth Partnership Northwest Ohio, Team NEO, the Greater Cleveland Partnership, the Greater Akron Chamber, the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber and the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce in addressing the letter to President Joe Biden:

“As representatives of the JobsOhio Network partners, economic development organizations and military installation support groups in the State of Ohio, we are writing to bring to your attention the extraordinary opportunities for basing space-related national security missions in the State of Ohio,” it reads.

It goes on to tout our state’s fine research institutions, manufacturing prowess and developing workforce.

“It is our understanding that members of the Ohio Senate and House Congressional delegations have initiated an effort to highlight Ohio’s support for space defense activities and the value our state can bring to new missions. We support that effort and welcome working with you, the Department of Defense, and the military services to ensure that Ohio’s space-related resources are fully utilized in defense of our Nation,” the letter concludes.

Federal officials would be hard pressed to find a better place for U.S. Space Command headquarters. Few states could handle such a responsibility. Development officials are to be commended for letting the Biden administration know: Here in Ohio, we are ready.
