Where the immigrants are not

Famed mid-20th Century bank robber Willie Sutton is alleged to have been asked once, “Why do you rob banks?”

“Because that’s where the money is.”

Someone should ask House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi if she understands where the illegal immigrants aren’t.

Obviously not.

Many of those on the front lines of illegal immigration, border control agents, say President Donald Trump is right in his desire to spend $5.7 billion on new physical barriers to along the nation’s southern border. Fences, walls — whatever name one uses — have helped curb illegal immigration in locations where they have been erected.

Common sense — something against which a substantial number of people have erected walls — ought to tell us barriers can be helpful.

But Pelosi, D-Calif., says no. Democrats in Congress will not authorize a dime for the barrier, she and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., vow.

Pelosi says she has a better idea. Brace yourself for this: She wants new electronic countermeasures to control the southern border, but only at official crossing points. Scanners and similar equipment at ports of entry could detect guns, illegal drugs, etc., and keep them out of the United States, she assures us.

It may have escaped her noticed that the vast majority of illegal immigrants do not come into this country at the formal ports of entry. Why try to talk your way past a border control agent when you can just walk into the United States somewhere else — where there are no barriers?

So Pelosi wants border control where the illegal immigrants aren’t. At least, like Willie Sutton, she and fellow liberals know where the money is.

In taxpayers’ pockets.
