Roasts and Toasts

(EDITOR’S NOTE: The following are notes and comments by the Journal staff to recognize both the accomplishments and shortcomings of people, officials and groups in our county, state, nation and world. Signed submissions from readers may be considered, but are not automatically included.)

TOAST East Liverpool landlord Gregg Stowers for stepping up and immediately taking action when he learned police were watching one of his rental homes due to illegal drug activity, issuing an eviction notice to the tenant. “We’re not going to put up with it. If we could have, we would have moved him out that night,” his brother, Councilman Craig Stowers – also a landlord in the city – said at a meeting this week. He urged other residents, “If you see something, say something.” Neighbors were notifying police of the activity at the house, and Councilman Bill Hogue said this is a “good example of neighborhoods working together.”

TOAST, also, the city of East Liverpool for its proactive stance against the drug problem, with Service-Safety Director Brian Allen saying a second officer has now been assigned to the county drug task force and that he is working on a “see something, say something” initiative for the city.

TOAST the people who assisted a woman in Salem whose son suffered a medical issue as she was taking her groceries to the car at Walmart. She said a nurse came from the store to assist her son while another stranger went and found her van, loaded her groceries into it and brought her son’s blanket, while consoling her daughter as the woman tended to her son. Another stranger found the car keys this distraught mom accidentally threw in the road when she ran to get help. This incident goes to show there truly are good people in this county, willing to help when needed.

ROAST people who leave phone messages in such a hurry that their names and return phone numbers are undecipherable. How can someone be expected to return a call when the caller’s number can’t be understood. Take a few minutes to make sure you’re speaking clearly.
