How will the voters judge?

Once again, FBI Director James Comey has let Hillary Clinton off the hook. On Sunday, he announced a rushed, second investigation of her illegal use of private email servers while secretary of state had turned up nothing new.

But what the intial probe, concluded in July, found was plenty.

Then, Comey said that on more than 100 occasions, Clinton’s use of private email servers had jeopardized national secrets. He would not recommend she be prosecuted because it appeared she did not intend to do that, Comey added.

On Sunday, Comey stuck to his position after a second investigation, of Clinton emails found on a computer used by disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner. Once again, nothing was found to pass Comey’s intent test.

But many Americans of far lesser standing than Clinton have been prosecuted for risking national security by careless handling of emails and other missteps. Intent did not matter with them.

The fact remains that Clinton broke the law repeatedly. She knew she was doing so. She lied about it. She tried to cover up her misbehavior. She made national secrets available to our enemies.

Comey has rendered his verdict. Voters may come to a different conclusion.
