The Greenpeace dropout

Advocates of drastic action to address climate change would have us believe there is no argument about the facts of the situation. But there is.

Greenpeace, the global organization that sometimes uses unconventional tactics to bring attention to its environmental concerns, is among those advocates. Its co-founder is not, however.

Patrick Moore helped establish Greenpeace many years ago. But since then, he has learned much more about the environment.

Now, Moore, who wrote a book titled, “Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout,” points out that carbon dioxide at certain levels is essential to life on earth. In fact, he adds, a sudden drop in CO2 levels about 18,000 years ago threatened much of the planet’s plant life.

During the past 140 million years, CO2 in the atmosphere has been declining, Moore said. Human activity is merely restoring the gas to its normal, desirable balance, he argues.

Obviously, Moore’s conclusions are open to debate. But that will not happen among his former comrades-in-arms.
