Count on the Canadians

A formation of nine foreign warplanes making low passes over Washington, D.C., normally would be cause for enormous alarm.

But not the other day. Those looking up at the aircraft would have seen maple leaf markings on them.

No problem. It’s the Canadians. They’re good friends.

It is difficult to conceive of an air force other than Canada’s given permission for such a flight. But U.S. officials had no problem with the show of comradeship by our friends to the north.

In a world full of enemies, Americans for many years have been able to count on just a few staunch allies. It bears remembering the Canadians are No. 1 on that list – not just allies, but friends through thick and thin. That friendship is something to be cherished and nurtured.
