Douglass Earl Moffett

SALEM — Douglass Earl Moffett, 50, of Salem, died Friday, October 22, 2021, at Salem Regional Medical Center following complications to COVID.

He was born on March 7, 1971, in Salem, the son of James Earl Moffett and Ann Elizabeth (Hartman) Greenisen.

Doug grew up in Salem, graduated in 1990 from Salem High School.

One of his first jobs was a delivery person for Josie’s Pizza in high school.

He took machine trade classes while in high school that later made it possible to work in various shops in the area. His career took him to Quaker Mfg., Commercial Metal Forming (Youngstown), Lehman Mills and most currently Butech/Bliss Mfg. to name a few of them.

Doug also had worked as a machine trades teacher at the Salem High School, served on the Salem City Street Dept then moved to the Traffic and Safety Division. Doug was the founder and former owner, of Ambassador Driving School. He started at a very young age, riding with his father plowing snow. Doug later started his own plowing business because it brought him “snow money”.

Doug was the kind of person that knew everyone, and he could leave the state and find someone in his travels that he knew. He was a natural at lending a hand to those in need. His approachable personality made it possible for his students and other friends call upon him when in need. It was not uncommon for his phone to ring late in the night from someone needing something, to discuss a personal problem, or even talk to someone during a crisis. Doug was very well known in the social network of the city.

He was a member of the Salem Elks, a former member of the Salem City School Board, volunteered all over the city for various people and committees. He was the one who turned on the Christmas tree on the Village Green each year, helped to decorate the downtown for holidays and events. He also was a junior baseball coach, as well as basketball and soccer. He was a big supporter of Salem sports of all kinds, and was there for his children over the years as well as the children of the community. Doug could always be found somewhere in the city helping on the various car shows and cruise events. He was a natural for being there and knowing where to find the resources needed to make a planned event come together. He was involved at the Salem First Friends Church in the youth group in his younger years, took many out on hay rides and also was known to do some brush hogging at the church. Doug loved being involved in this city, he even took a run for the Mayors position.

His favorite things to do were going out to the cottage at the lake with family over the holidays, the ocean off the coast of North Carolina, going for long car rides to no where special, and then a nice long quiet visit to his hot tub.

In addition to his parents of Salem, he is survived by his wife, Lori Lynn (Ketchum) Moffett, children; Hailey Christine Moffett of Lakewood, and Justin Douglass Moffett of Salem, Siblings; James Eric Moffett of Salem and Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” (Mark) Moffett-Flanagan of Farmville, NC.

Due to COVID, the family had decided to have a unique visitation for Doug.
