Man intentionally dives in front of vehicle in Salem

SALEM — No charges are expected after a pedestrian intentionally dove out in front of a westbound Chevy pickup on East State Street near Roosevelt Avenue Tuesday night and was run over by the truck’s front passenger tire.

According to the report at 9:27 p.m., the driver of the pickup said the person just purposely jumped in front of his vehicle, causing him to run him over. Officers also spoke with the pedestrian, who was conscious, and he also said he purposely jumped in front of the truck with the intent of harming himself.

He was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital by EMT ambulance for further treatment and evaluation. Officers contacted the hospital and faxed a pink slip to order the man be evaluated.

Salem Police Chief J.T. Panezott said police learned the pedestrian was a patient at Salem Regional Medical Center and still had an IV when he left the facility, crossed State Street to the northeast corner near Roosevelt and then dove in front of the truck. He was wearing street clothes at the time.

No charges are expected to be filed against the pedestrian due to treatment for his medical condition.

“I hope the gentleman gets the help he needs,” Panezott said.
