A quick-thinking passerby used an extinguisher to put out the fire before firefighters arrived. Ward said it appears a cigarette thrown from the truck may have ignited one of the boxes. Damage was minimal. Two trucks responded just before 1 p.m.

Perry Township

— An Idaho Avenue woman reported Tuesday someone entered her unlocked vehicle in the garage along with her daughter’s vehicle. She was missing $10 in change. Her daughter was missing two credit cards, a AAA card and an insurance card. No damage was reported to the garage or the vehicles.

— A West State man reported Tuesday someone entered his unlocked vehicle. Nothing was taken but the plastic out of the cupholders.

— A Maryland Avenue woman reported Tuesday a 6-foot aluminum ladder was missing from her garage along with garden tools and two window fans. She believes her landlord entered the garage and took the items along with her own items. She also said the landlord was harassing her by texts wanting her to move out. An officer spoke to the landlord who said she is also getting harassing texts from the woman. She said the renter is not letting the realtor or potential buyers into the residence, as she is trying to sell the property. The landlord said she has not removed any items from the residence because she lives three hours away.

— A West State Street resident reported Tuesday someone entered his residence while he was sleeping removed a weapon from the front porch and a trombone and amplifier from an outbuilding.

Salem

— Jarritt Manley, 30, of Salem-Alliance Road, was cited for assured clear distance after he rear-ended a vehicle driven by Krista Rhodes, 39, of Woodsend Drive, at 6:10 p.m. Tuesday on West State Street.

— Officers assisted in getting a bat out of a house on Aetna Street at 12:42 a.m. Wednesday.

— Police and firefighters responded at 11:35 p.m. Tuesday to Quaker City Castings, 310 Euclid St., where a worker was hurt. A heavy object fell on him. He was conscious. He was taken to St. Elizabeth .

–A 16-year-old Hanoverton girl was taken into custody for obstructing official business and transported to the Tobin center Tuesday night after officers found her at Waterworth Memorial Park and she lied several times about her identity, which was confirmed by her uncle. Officers were flagged down at 8:59 p.m. Tuesday by a man in the area of West State near Georgetown Road who was looking for his niece who ran away from home in Hanoverton and may be at a School Street address. At the residence, police had been told she may be at the park with a boy. The girl had just been released from Tobin earlier in the day.

— A 15-year-old Salem girl was charged with domestic violence and ordered taken to Tobin center after police responding to a dispute on Franklin at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday saw her strike her mother several times. The mother said she was trying to take her daughter and put her into the car when she began hitting her. The girl said her right shoulder was hurting to she was to SRMC before going to Tobin.

— An East Fourth Street woman reported Tuesday the theft of contents of a FedEx package — LED headlights — that were left between the screen door and solid door.

— During a traffic stop at 4:12 p.m. Tuesday on West Wilson Street, an officer entered the plates and the registered owner came back with a felony warrant, but the owner/driver said it was a case of stolen identity. He said this has happened before due to another person stealing his social security number. The officer officer confirmed the story with Clark County sheriff’s office.

— An officer on patrol on East Sixth Street at 10:03 p.m. Tuesday stopped after a woman yelled for him at the corner of North Union, saying a large black Great Dane dog was loose and tried to get a lady’s dog that she was walking. They managed to get the dog away from that dog, but now she said the Great Dane was in her yard. She tried to call the humane officer, who was busy on another call, then the officer called for the humane officer explaining the dog did not like males when he tried to get near it. The dog was fine with the woman who gave it food and water. The humane officer was on the way.

— Police answered several reports of vandalism Thursday morning possibly from overnight. A caller reported a van vandalized on South Broadway and a representative of the Salem Historical Society reported someone broke the table inside the gazebo at the museum. A woman on Washington Avenue reported someone put washable paint on her vehicle parked in front of her residence and a man on Maple said someone painted stripes on the side of his truck. A man in the 300 block of West Wilson also reported his truck vandalized.

— A woman in the 1500 block of North Ellsworth reported Wednesday that two dogs attacked her cat and killed it. She had never seen the dogs before and they ran into the woods east of her house.

— Brandi McVay, 25, of 180 Ohio Ave., was taken into custody at her home at 10:16 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant.

— Anthony Colian Jr., 39, of Meadow Lane, was cited for OVI, marked lanes and a turn signal violation after a traffic stop at 11:03 p.m. Wednesday on West State.

— Police ended up citing two people Wednesday shortly after Chief J.T. Panezott noticed a truck hauling a boat on Sixth Street toward Ellsworth, dragging the boat motor on the road. Police found the boat and truck backed into a drive, with a man standing next to it and a woman and others inside the truck. The male had been driving and had no license and police said the woman was the owner and knew he didn’t have a valid license. Timothy Phillips, 37, of East Seventh Street, was cited for driving under suspension and Joann Martin, 42, of East Seventh Street, was cited for permitting unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. When learning he was being cited, Phillips became verbally abusive towards the officer, the report said.

Salem

— Firefighters responded to the Rite Aid parking lot, 2229 E. State St., for a call at 6:51 a.m. Thursday about a mulch fire. Firefighters found a 2- by 2-foot area of mulch burning in an island in the lot and extinguished the fire.

— Wires were reported down on a sidewalk in the area of Lincoln and Sixth at 7 a.m. Wednesday. The wires were cable television wires and were still attached to the house. Police were advised to contact Spectrum.

Salem

— A domestic was reported at 12:21 a.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Ohio Avenue where both people involved said they had an argument. The female said the male was constantly yelling at her and the male said the female was upset and just wanted to talk about their relationship, but he did not want to and was trying to leave. He said she struck him in the face but there were no injuries.

— An officer at 11:11 p.m. Tuesday saw a male walking inside Centennial Park after closing hours. He was advised of park hours and said he was just passing through and was sent on his way.

— A bike found in Centennial Park at 10:43 p.m. Tuesday after closing hours was placed in the police lost and found.

— An officer responded to the 400 block of Aetna Street at 10:29 p.m. Tuesday regarding an abandoned/junk vehicle. A warning tag was placed on the vehicle advising if it isn’t moved in 10 days, it will be towed.

— Police were called at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday to the 400 block of East Perry Street to check the well-being of a male who advised officers he heard voices telling him to harm himself. Fire department first responders and EMT were called to the scene and he was voluntarily taken to Salem Regional Medical Center.

— A woman in the 700 block of North Lincoln Avenue reported at 7:29 p.m. Tuesday that she had a small hole dug in her back yard and paint on her fence. She just wanted a report.

— A possible fight was reported at 4:46 p.m. Tuesday on Cedar Ridge where a male said his ex-girlfriend came to the residence and began yelling outside causing a disturbance. He said just yelling occurred with nothing physical taking place. The female left.

— A possible overdose was reported at 2:57 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of Continental Drive where police found a male juvenile had taken too much of his prescription medication. He was taken to Salem hospital by EMT.

— An officer on patrol at 2:49 p.m. Tuesday on Jones Drive was stopped by a resident who found a license plate in his front yard. The plate belonged to a resident up the street and was placed on the owner’s front porch by the officer.

— Two vehicles were towed from a Woodland Avenue property at 1:22 p.m. Tuesday after the time limit for removing them was up after being tagged previously.

— A vehicle was reported parked in an alley blocking traffic in the 900 block of South Lundy Avenue at 12:26 p.m. Tuesday. The vehicle was towed.

— Solicitors were reported at 11:03 a.m. Tuesday on Jefferson Avenue, but were able to produce the proper paperwork from the city.

— A woman in the 1300 block of East Pershing Street reported at 10:02 a.m. Tuesday that sometime on Sunday, someone broke into her residence and stole her prescription medication along with a large amount of cash belonging to her boyfriend. Clothing had been thrown from the dresser all over the floor which she had cleaned up.

— A license found in a yard on Summit Street was turned over to police at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday.

— A woman reported at 9:43 a.m. Tuesday that sometime from last Friday to Tuesday, someone entered her vehicle and took multiple items.

— A woman in the 100 block of Jennings Avenue reported at 8:26 a.m. Tuesday that a man parked in their lot and when she requested he move the vehicle, he said he would but just walked down the alley leaving it. She said numerous vehicles and buses need the parking and said he also uses her trash container. An officer talked to the man who lives just two houses up and told him not to park there and to stop using her trash container. He said his brother would move the vehicle and that he understood.

— An officer on patrol at 7:44 a.m. Tuesday saw a baby stroller sitting on the sidewalk with no one around in the 2400 block of East State Street. While checking the stroller, the officer saw a gray and orange tent in the woods and spoke with two people staying in the tent. They advised it was their stroller which they use to haul their stuff around as they were camping.

Perry Township

— Officers responded at 9:42 p.m. Tuesday to the Dollar General on East Pidgeon Road for suspicious activity. The doors were locked and the store wasn’t supposed to close until 10 p.m. Officers found two vehicles in the parking lot with the door locked and banged on the doors until an employee emerged. The employee advised she was there alone and had to use the restroom. She said everything was fine.

— A woman in the 1300 block of Pembrooke Drive reported at 6:08 p.m. Tuesday that an individual in the complex damaged some of her property in the garage. Police attempted contact with the other person, but got no answer.

— Police were called at 5:51 p.m. Tuesday to the 1400 block of North Lincoln Avenue for a suspicious vehicle that has been stopping at a residence asking to give a quote for painting the inside of the house. The homeowner told the suspect to stop coming to his house and that they did not need anyone to paint for them. The vehicle was a red custom van with a green canoe on top. Police were not able to make contact with the van or the driver.
