Crestview school board gets overview of Breakfast Club
COLUMBIANA — A Breakfast Club at Crestview Elementary School is providing a calm start to the school day for students.
Crestview’s Special Education Director Kimberly Gilbert gave an overview of the program during the November board meeting.
She said the program is intended to provide a calm, positive start to the school day for students.
How the program works is that interested students are able to have breakfast in a specific room that is geared toward providing a calm atmosphere through yoga via videos projected onto a screen and through drawing and coloring opportunities.
Gilbert said lanyard passes are available at three stations in the building for students to access the Breakfast Club and that if breakfast is needed, trays can be brought to the room to provide a calm, less stimulating environment for students to eat breakfast before going to class in the morning.
“Every day students are provided with themed yoga videos projected onto a screen with yoga mats for each student as well as a roll of paper and crayons for drawing and coloring,” she said.
A rotating schedule assigns supervising adults to the Breakfast Club each day, she added.
She also said that there are personal care items available for students in need of basic hygiene in the mornings as well.
“A binder with individualized social stories addressing student needs such as coping strategies, initiating social interactions, and promoting health and wellness is available for the adult to provide for specific students,” she said in her report to the board.
She also said some students meet with their assigned adult on specific days to work on targeted IEP goals or interventions monitored through the IAT process.
Student feedback has been positive, with many saying they enjoy the yoga and calm environment.
