‘Arsenic and Old Lace’
The fall play “Arsenic and Old Lace,” under the direction of Attila Samu and assisted by Lorina Moffett, will be presented on stage at Salem High School’s auditorium this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. “Arsenic and Old Lace” is a black comedy play about a drama critic, Mortimer Brewster (Nathan Fowler) who discovers his sweet, elderly aunts; Abby (Meredith Powell) and Martha (Becca Hileman) Brewster, have been poisoning lonely old men with elderberry wine –believing it to be a mercy to “put them out of their misery.” The chaos escalates when Mortimer’s murderous and disfiguring brother, Jonathan (Alex DeRienzo), returns with his plastic surgeon accomplice, Dr. Einstein (Mave Johnson), and complicates Mortimer’s efforts to protect his aunts and their deadly secret. This hilarious comedy, written by Joseph Kesselring, was so popular as a play in 1941 that the film adaptation of the same name, starring Cary Grant, had to be postponed for release until 1944. Shown are, Lily Hill as Elaine; Nathan Fowler as Mortimer Brewster; Jacob Capaldi as Teddy; Alex DeRienzo as Jonathan; Mave Johnson as Dr. Einstein; Meredith Powell as Aunt Abby; Becca Hileman as Aunt Martha and Sophia Mohn as Mr. Witherspoon.
