Southern Local Schools BOE to consider retire/rehire of superintendent

SALINEVILLE — Some may note that the love that Southern Local Schools Superintendent Tom Cunningham has for his district runs deep.

Board members recognize that loyalty, and that is why they are considering rehiring him 60 days after he retires from the district.

Cunningham has served seven years as Southern’s top administrator, previously serving as Beaver Local High School principal and Southern Local’s elementary school principal.

The Southern Local school board held a special meeting Thursday night for both proponents and opponents of Cunningham’s rehiring to express their opinions regarding the prospect.

Scott Hart, school board president, said that the meeting lasted less than 20 minutes and didn’t include any opponents to Cunningham’s re-employment.

Plenty of Cunningham’s supporters showed up as did one area resident that just wanted him to remind the board of what the district achieved under his leadership. Hart said no board action was taken to rehire Cunningham yet; however, he expects that decision might be voted on during the August regular meeting, expressing how it is more difficult to get good people in these key jobs.

Starting at $2.99/week.
