Library program focused on Isaly’s
SALEM — The June 10th program of the Salem Historical Society & Museum will be presented at the Shaffer Library, located at 239 South Lundy Avenue at 7 p.m. Nonmembers of the Society are welcome to attend. Following a short business meeting, the program, “Isaly Dairy Co.”, will be presented by Byron Eichorn, Descendant of Alice Islay.
Isaly’s was a chain of family-owned dairies and restaurants started in Mansfield, with locations throughout the American Midwest from the early 20th century until the 1970s. By 1918, Isaly had a dairy and new headquarters on Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. The Youngstown area was the largest Isaly’s market, boasting at one time almost 130 stores. Isaly’s is best known for its signature chipped-chopped ham, the invention of the Klondike Bar and the iconic Skyscraper ice cream cone.
Byron Eichorn is a direct descendant of his aunt Alice Isaly who was married to Sam Isaly, president of the Isaly Dairy Co. in the 30s and 40s. In addition to the beginning history of the family and the fledgling company, he has a collection of Isaly artifacts and first-person accounts of memories.
